Getting Your Vision to Go the Distance

Myopia is the most common refractive error worldwide, and its prevalence is rapidly rising. In fact, some studies believe that nearly half of the world’s population will have some degree of myopia by 2050.

However, there are management options available to help keep your vision clear and slow down myopia progression. If you’re struggling with myopia symptoms, book your appointment today, and we can help find the techniques that work for you and your vision.

What is Myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a refractive error that causes your eyes to elongate in size, focusing light in front of your retina instead of on it, leading to blurry distance vision.

Myopia is generally hereditary. Some studies have shown that spending a long time performing up-close tasks and not spending enough time outdoors increases your risk of developing myopia.

Aside from affecting your distance vision, high myopia could increase your risk of developing eye diseases or experience vision loss caused by retinal tears, holes, and detachments.

Myopia & Your Child

Myopia can start developing in your child as young as 3 years old. As it progresses, myopia can eventually start affecting how well they see and learn in school.

While there is no cure for myopia, regular eye exams are essential for preserving their vision.

Vision Therapy for Myopia

Eye focusing, eye coordination problems, and visual dysfunction can also contribute to myopia. For these situations, we can offer vision therapy treatments to slow the severity of your symptoms. Occasionally, a child can appear myopic when in reality there is a visual skill problem such as accommodative (near focusing) spasm which makes distance vision blurry.

Vision therapy strengthens your brain’s control of your eyes. We’ll develop a custom vision therapy program to address your needs using various tools and exercises, including:

  • Therapeutic lenses, prisms and filters
  • Computerized vision games and exercises
  • Free space tracking, focusing, and convergence/divergence exercises
  • Exercises that promote improved eye-hand coordination, balance, gaze stability, depth perception, and visual motor integration

By enhancing the coordination between your eyes and your brain, you may start seeing better results in schools, sports, and beyond.

Controlling Myopia

Multifocal contact lenses are regularly used to help manage the development of myopia. When your eye elongates, the light that enters through your cornea can focus in front of your retina, causing your eyes to elongate further as a response.

Multifocals focus light at various distances to help it land on your retina and slow how fast your myopia develops.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) contact lenses are a fantastic way to control your myopia while also achieving clearer vision without the use of glasses or contact lenses.

Ortho-K lenses are worn at night and temporarily reshape your cornea as your sleep. Remove them when you wake up and enjoy clear vision throughout the day. However, if you stop wearing these contacts at night, your cornea will revert to its original shape and your myopia will return.
