Dr. Shumaker is particularly at ease with children and is skilled in diagnosing and treating various developmental eye conditions. He received his Doctorate of Optometry degree from the UC Berkeley School of Optometry. He has nearly 15 years of experience working as a private practice clinician focused on vision therapy for learning-related vision problems, sports vision performance enhancement training, and concussion rehabilitation. He is also collaborating on research studies in sports vision and concussion-related photophobia. As an Assistant Clinical Professor and Chief of the Sports Vision & Concussion Clinic at Cal, he mentors fourth year optometry students and serves patients referred from bay area hospitals and clinics including UCSF, Stanford, and professional and youth sports teams.

Dr. Shumaker is especially interested in harnessing children’s and adults’ inherent neuroplasticity with vision training techniques to improve visual skills and visual function. These include:

• Convergence (ability to cross the eyes, and uncross them)
• Binocular eye coordination

These conditions negatively impact reading, learning, and athletic performance.

He also has unique experience in the fitting of specialty contact lenses for children and adults. He was a pioneer in the use of orthokeratology (corneal reshaping) and soft multifocal contact lenses to help control the worsening of myopia (near-sightedness) in children which has now become the standard of care.

Dr. Negin Aboutorabian was born and raised in sunny Santa Monica, California. She received her B.A. in Integrative Biology with an emphasis in Human Biology from UC Berkeley. She continued her education and earned her Doctorate of Optometry from UC Berkeley. The bay area is her home away from home and she is a proud double bear!

Dr. Negin gained vast clinical experience through her clinical internships at San Francisco Veterans Affairs Hospital and through different specialties including binocular vision and vision therapy at UC Berkeley Meredith Morgan Eye Center. For the past two years she has worked in various private offices in southern California, treating and managing a wide variety of ocular disease and providing eye care for patients of all ages.

Dr. Negin has developed a passion for working with children, utilizing vision training to improve visual and perceptual skills, reduce blur, double vision, eyestrain, and eye fatigue, reading and learning, and sports performance. Outside of optometry, Dr. Negin enjoys baking, practicing yoga, walking and eating lots of pizza!
